Why you will love this recipe

  • The classic everything bagel is topped with a combination of sesame seeds (typically white and black), poppy seeds, flakes of garlic, onion and salt. Add all these flavors for a fun twist on the traditional flavors!
  • This hummus is jam packed with flavor and is incredibly simple to make!
  • This hummus is made with green lentils (sometimes called brown lentils) because they are easier to work with than the traditional chickpea when making at home!
  • Healthy lentil dip is perfect for snacking or a great addition to wraps and sandwiches! The flavors would even pair well to make a breakfast burrito!
  • Everything bagel hummus is made with just a few ingredients and is naturally gluten free, vegan, dairy free and budget friendly! It’s also a great way to use up leftover green lentils or a healthy snack to make during meal prep for the week!
Ingredients for everything bagel hummus.

Ingredients

  • Green lentils (cooked) – sometimes called brown lentils because after cooking, green lentils actually look brown
  • Tahini – for that traditional hummus taste, you could also use almond butter, sunflower seed butter or cashew butter.
  • Lemon juice – the acid helps give the lentil dip a bright note.
  • Everything bagel seasoning – I buy a premade version from Trader Joe’s but you can make your own at home as well – see my tips below.
  • Salt – although everything bagel seasoning does have salt, I like to add just a pinch of salt to help balance the flavors.

Tips on making this lentil dip

This everything bagel hummus recipe uses cooked green lentils instead of chickpeas.

I have found that when making hummus at home, using chickpeas can be very time consuming. This is because to get the best texture, you often have to peel each individual chickpea which takes quite a bit of time.

Green lentils are incredibly inexpensive and a great pantry item to keep on hand.

You can find green lentils already cooked for you at most grocery stores! Just check out the refrigerated section of the produce department, they are usually in a box and have a pretty long expiration date (I like to buy a few at a time and use them on salads and in dips).

Cooked green lentils can often be found in the canned beans section of the grocery store as well. Be sure to drain and rinse canned green lentils well before using.

To cook lentils at home, simply add the lentils and water to a large pot and cover. Cook the lentils over high heat until boiling, and immediately turn the heat down to low. Cook for 15 more minutes until the lentils are tender. Drain off any excess water.

What to serve with this dip

Everything bagel hummus would add flavor to so many meals or snacks!

Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

  • As a dip: Dip fresh veggies or your favorite chip or pita chip.
  • As a spread: Use on sandwiches, wraps or even as a fun twist on breakfast burritos instead of salsa.
  • As part of a recipe: Use this everything bagel seasoning to add flavor to chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad, or even chickpeas salad. Simply use this everything bagel lentil hummus in place of mayo!

Other flavor additions

The flavoring of this hummus is perfect as it is. However, if you wanted to change the flavor up some, you could add:

  • Fresh parsley (to add brightness)
  • Smoked paprika (to give it a more smoky flavor)
  • Crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper (to give it some spice)

How to make everything bagel seasoning

Everything bagel seasoning is available at most stores in the spice section (as it has gained popularity). Each brand will have a slightly different flavor based on the ratio or spices and if they toast the ingredients first or not. I personally love the Trader Joe’s version.

If you want to make this seasoning at home, you will need:

  • 2 tbsp. white sesame seeds (3 tbsp. if you don’t have black sesame seeds)
  • 1 tbsp. black sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1 tbsp. minced dried garlic flakes
  • 1 tbsp. minced dried onion flakes
  • 1 tbsp. poppy seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp. flaky salt

For the best flavor, toast the sesame seeds, minced dried garlic flakes and dried onion flakes in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes until the sesame seeds start to brown and the garlic and onion get fragrant. Don’t walk away or they could burn.

Combine the seasoning and stir well. Store in a glass container for up to 2 months.

Storing leftovers

How long can hummus sit out

The max time hummus should sit out on the counter is about 2 hours according to FDA guidelines on food safety.

How long does hummus last in fridge

You can store in the fridge for up to 5 days in an airtight container.

Note: If you are using lentils that have been sitting in the fridge for a few days already, you will want to take that into account and eat this in a day or 2.

How to freeze

You can certainly freeze this hummus in a freezer safe container for up to 2 months. I like to use silicone ice cubes to freeze dips so you can just defrost what you need instead of the entire recipe.

Note that when defrosting, the texture may change ever so slightly but it will not impact the flavor. You may want to run defrosted hummus through the food processor again after defrosting if you find the texture has changed significantly.

Substitutions

  • Green lentils – Green lentils are hearty and hold up well to becoming a dip. If you don’t have green lentils, you can use chickpeas. To get the best texture when blending, you may want to take the time to peel the chickpeas first. To make peeling chickpeas easier, you will want to boil them in water with some baking soda first (even if they are canned). This helps the skins release from the chickpeas when peeling.
  • Note: If you do not do well with legumes/beans, you can also use roasted cauliflower as the base for this hummus. Follow the directions for this creamy roasted cauliflower hummus and add everything bagel seasoning when blending.
  • Tahini – tahini is a paste made from ground sesame seeds (much like peanut butter or almond butter). It can be found in most grocery stores (sometimes it’s in the international or specialty food sections, but often it’s on a bottom shelf near the peanut butters). If you cannot have sesame seeds or don’t have tahini, you could use almond butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter in it’s place.
  • Lemon juice – lemon juices adds brightness and helps break through the heaviness of the dip. If you don’t have lemon juice, you can use 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar.
  • Everything bagel seasoning – you can make your own seasoning (see recipe above) if you cannot find it in the store, or you can order it online. To get close to the flavors without having everything you need, you will want to add at least minced dried onion and minced dried garlic along with more salt.
